How to Give Your Car a Spotless Hand Wash in 5 Easy Steps

Your Guide to a Shiny and Spotless Car Wash

Don’t take another boring ride through those big brushes at your local car wash. Step out from the driver’s side, and take pride in washing the car yourself. Those drive-thru car washes only damage the paint and don’t really provide a deep clean. It may take longer, but a hand wash is the only way to make the car shine and look its best. Here are five steps to a cleaner car:

  1. Gather the supplies.

You’ll need a few supplies if you want to get the job done right. Though some people use dish soap, it’s best to buy a detergent that’s specifically made for cars. Gather these supplies, and you’ll be all set:

  • Bucket
  • Brush
  • Car wash detergent
  • Hose
  • Sponge
  • Towel
  • Washing mitts
  • Wax
  1. Prepare the car.

Park the car on a concrete surface like your driveway. If you wash your car on the grass, you’ll risk making the area slippery and splashing mud back onto the vehicle. Fill your bucket with water and detergent following the directions on the label.

  1. Wash the car.

Give the car a good rinse with the hose, put on your washing mitts and get ready to wash. Because wheels collect the most dirt, wash them first with the brush. Use the sponge or the mitts to wash the rest of the car, making sure to soak them in the bucket every so often. Start at the top of the car, and work your way down toward the bottom for the best results.

  1. Dry the car.

Rinse off the car one final time with the hose, and wipe it dry using the towel. You may need more than one towel to dry the entire car completely. Make sure to remove standing water on areas like the grill and other metal parts as it can lead to premature rusting and spotting.

  1. Wax the car.

After drying the car, it’s time to wax it. Wax protects the paint and the finish, helping your car to look as good as new for longer. Apply the wax using a nonabrasive towel. If water fails to bead on the surface, it’s a sign that you should apply another coat of wax.
