Make Your Own Overnight Oats

Mason jars have long been used for canning, but recently they’ve become popular for crafting, home décor and other cooking uses. Why not consider Mason jar meals? Use and reuse your canning jars to create beautifully presented, ready-to-eat treats. Whether you’re eating at home or on the go, these Mason jar meals are tasty and easy to put together too.

Rise & Shine with Mason Jar Breakfasts

Getting breakfast ready the night before can save you serious time in the morning. There’s no better way to do so than with Mason jar breakfasts that the whole family will love. One of the easiest to make is the breakfast parfait. Simply layer your choice of yogurt, granola and fresh fruit in a jar. Put the lid on tightly and store in the refrigerator until you’re ready to eat.

Overnight oats are also a great choice when you want to make a quick breakfast in a canning jar. For one serving of overnight oats, you’ll need

  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • 1 cup milk of your choice
  • Honey or maple syrup
  • Fruits, nuts and other add-ins of your choice

To make overnight oats, mix the oatmeal and milk in a quart Mason jar. Then, mix in your choice of sweetener, fresh fruit, jam or nuts. You can also add chia seeds, cocoa powder and liquid flavorings for an even tastier experience. Screw the lid onto the jar and refrigerate overnight. You can warm up your oats in the morning or eat them cold from the jar.

Delicious, On-the-Go Meals

Meals made in canning jars are popular for more than just their fun appearance and great taste. They also offer a convenient way to make meals for school, work or on-the-go lunches. One of the classic choices is the Mason jar salad. To make a green salad, start with an empty jar. Pour in your desired amount of dressing. Layer your other ingredients with your heartiest vegetables at the bottom. Save the lettuce for the top layer. When you’re ready to eat, shake up the jar and dig in.

Another great on-the-go meal is homemade instant noodles in a Mason jar. If you’ll be around a fridge at lunch time, you can make these jars with fresh noodles. If you’ll be camping, you can make them with dried noodles and dehydrated veggies. They’ll cook up just like store-bought noodle cups when you add hot water.
