As summer unfolds, many of us are enjoying backyard barbecues, weekend hikes and evenings tending our gardens. But with summer weather comes an increase in tick activity, making tick safety something homeowners and outdoor enthusiasts need to take seriously.
Ticks are small but potentially dangerous pests. They can carry diseases like Lyme disease and the Powassan virus, which can cause lasting health problems or even death if left untreated. The good news is, with the right approach, you can reduce your risk.
How to Stay Protected
Ticks love shady, moist areas. Common hiding spots include tall grass, brush, wooded edges, stone walls and piles of leaves. Your own yard can become a thriving tick habitat if not properly maintained.
Tick prevention is about preparation. Here’s how to keep yourself, your family and your pets safe:
- Dress smart. Wear light-colored clothing to make spotting ticks easier. Choose long sleeves and tuck pants into socks when walking in tick-prone areas.
- Use repellent. Apply EPA-approved repellents like DEET or permethrin to clothing and exposed skin.
- Do regular checks. After spending time outdoors, check your body carefully—especially under arms, behind knees and at your hairline. Don’t forget to inspect your children and pets.
- Protect pets. Use tick-prevention collars, topical treatments or oral medications recommended by your vet.
- Maintain your yard. Keep grass trimmed short, clear out brush, eliminate standing water and remove leaf litter regularly to reduce tick-friendly environments. If you live in a high-tick location—such as near a wooded area, lake or pond—consider professional treatment for your property.
What to Do If You Find a Tick
Remove the tick promptly with fine-tipped tweezers. Grasp it close to the skin and pull upward steadily, without twisting. Clean the bite area with soap and water. Keep an eye out for symptoms like rash or fever and consult your doctor if you’re concerned.
