How to Make a Rustic DIY Wooden Flag

Step 1: Cut the Boards

Cut 13 wood strips to the same length to create the flag stripes. If you want extra support, cut a thin plywood backing board to fit the finished size of your flag.

Step 2: Sand the Wood

Smooth rough edges and corners with sandpaper or a sanding sponge. Wipe away dust before painting to help the paint adhere properly and create a cleaner finish.

Step 3: Lay Out the Flag

Arrange the boards into 13 stripes and position them in the correct order. Mark the upper left corner where the blue field will be painted. The blue should extend down to cover 7 of the stripes and across to about 40% of the width.

Step 4: Paint the Stripes

Starting with red, paint the boards in alternating red and white stripes (there should be 7 red boards and 6 white). Use painter’s tape to create crisp, clean lines and prevent colors from bleeding together.

Step 5: Paint the Blue Field

Paint the upper left section blue. For an easy DIY version, use a star stencil, small white wood stars or simple painted dots to represent the stars.

Step 6: Attach the Boards

Secure the boards to the backing board using wood glue and screws or finish nails. Check that everything is aligned before fastening the pieces permanently.

Step 7: Seal the Project

Apply a clear outdoor sealer or polyurethane to help protect the wood and paint from the elements.

Step 8: Add Hanging Hardware

Install D-rings, a sawtooth hanger or other picture hanging hardware on the back so your flag is ready to display.
